Then, Essun and Nassun’s story picks up in the present time as the moon has been primed to be pulled back into proper orbit with the earth. First, Hoa tells his story from nearly forty thousand years before the time of the Stillness.He explains how he is the one responsible for throwing the moon out of orbit. The novel is divided between two different time periods. This final installment in the Broken Earth Trilogy addresses the themes of hate and racism, the dangers of abusing natural resources, and the importance of recording and sharing stories. In both cases, it is an image of love that makes them show mercy instead. Both Hoa and Nassun have been so hurt by life that they want to use the opportunities they have been given to destroy those who have hurt them. Jemisin, the parallel stories of Hoa’s life as a tuner and Nassun’s life as an orogene illustrate it is sometimes the ones most hurt by racism and ignorance who must use their power to make the world a better place.

Viking Altar Rock, a Minnesota erratic with pits drilled in its upper surface.

It is listed and preserved as an archaeological site by the Washington State Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation.

The stone is about one mile south of the former Naches Trail, and was apparently rediscovered when a suburban housing development was begun in 1999.

Adams, all of which have significance for local Native tribes. Helens (before it erupted), and potentially Mt. Pits in the surface of the boulder also appear to point towards Mt. Some of the holes align with the sun's position on the solstices, which may have allowed Native Americans to predict the changing of seasons. The stone may have also been used to predict lunar standstills. The holes point in the direction of Polaris, Sirius, the Little Dipper, and Orion. The holes seem to point towards both astronomical and geographic features. It has over 20 pits pounded into its surface that appear to be man-made.

The stone may have astronomical significance to the Puyallup tribe of Native Americans. The stone's height and width are 4.5 by 12 feet (1.4 m × 3.7 m). The boulder was deposited approximately 13,000 years ago. The Skystone is an andesite glacial erratic boulder in Bonney Lake, Washington.
